Sector Study

Details

UNIDO commissioned a sectoral study covering five energy- and resource-intensive manufacturing sectors in Pakistan: textiles, foundries, ceramics, paper and pulp, and dairy processing. The assignment established sector energy baselines and benchmarks and identified and quantified technically feasible energy-efficiency and renewable-energy opportunities. It also considered water consumption and waste-management issues relevant to overall resource performance. The study generated sector-specific evidence to support industrial energy planning, prioritisation of improvement opportunities and stakeholder discussion on practical energy-efficiency and renewable-energy interventions.

As the national energy-efficiency expert within the multidisciplinary study team, Espire provided the following services:

  • Conducted literature reviews and desk research on the status of energy efficiency and renewable energy across the five target sectors.
  • Collected and analysed sector-level energy data to establish energy-consumption baselines and relevant performance indicators.
  • Undertook energy-performance benchmarking for the textile, foundry, ceramics, paper and pulp, and dairy-processing sectors. Reviewed water-use and waste-management issues affecting the sectors’ wider resource-efficiency performance.
  • Identified and assessed process-level energy-efficiency and renewable-energy opportunities for each sector. Supported the technical quantification and prioritisation of feasible interventions for inclusion in the sector studies.
  • Contributed to the preparation of five sectoral reports documenting baseline conditions, performance gaps and improvement opportunities.
  • Supported stakeholder validation workshops to review the findings, test their sector relevance and incorporate feedback into the final reports.
