GIZ FABRIC promoted regional cooperation and a shared understanding of environmentally and socially sustainable production across major Asian textile-producing countries. The programme connected decision-makers, industry representatives, service providers and other change agents to transfer successful national approaches across the region and support implementation in selected priority areas. It also supported alignment with international and German sustainability initiatives relevant to textile supply chains, including the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and the Green Button.
Working within a regional consortium, Espire provided technical backstopping for the Pakistan component and supported cross-country cooperation among Pakistan, Bangladesh and Vietnam. Espire facilitated five regional dialogue and networking events and contributed to five knowledge products. It also supported the development or upgrading of 10 training and advisory services for public-, private- and civil-society actors working to improve the textile sector’s environmental performance. Espire contributed to a technical study assessing options to replace fossil-fuel-based thermal generation with renewable fuels in the textile and garment sectors of Pakistan and Bangladesh. In Vietnam, it supported the introduction of energy-efficiency practices through a master-trainer programme. The assignment also strengthened capacity to assess factory environmental performance using the Higg Facility Environmental Module and developed implementation guidance on the Punjab Hazardous Substances Act for the Punjab Environmental Protection Department. These activities combined regional knowledge exchange with practical support on energy transition, environmental assessment, chemical regulation and institutional capacity development.
